From Proto-Tai *tamᴮ (low; short (not tall)). Cognate with Thai ต่ำ (dtàm), Lao ຕ່ຳ (tam), Shan တႅမ်ႇ (tèm), Ahom 𑜄𑜪 (taṃ) or 𑜄𑜉𑜫 (tam), Bouyei dams.
