   Voilà l’homme à côté duquel Marc s’asseyait.

   There is the man next to whom Marc was sitting.

Usage notes

• Duquel is used with compound prepositions ending in de, such as à côté de, près de, en faveur de (as above).
• Duquel can also replace the possessive dont (“whose”). This is overall rare, but it is necessary when the noun phrase is preceded by any preposition: l'homme avec la femme duquel j'ai parlé (“the man with whose wife I've spoken”).
