Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from French escale, itself from Italian scala, (in this sense) taken from Byzantine Greek σκάλα (skála), from Latin scala, whence the Romanian inherited doublet scară (stairs, ladder). Also a doublet of scală and schelă.
