Etymology

From Old Swedish gærþ (a deed, a cost, what must be done), from Old Norse gørð, from Proto-Germanic *garwidō, related to the adjective *garwaz (prepared, ready). Related to göra (to do). Compare Icelandic gerð, Danish gærd.
