Etymology

Probably from an unrecorded Old English *gōdre hǣlu, calquing Old Norse góðu heilli (“fortunately”), thus equivalent to good +‎ -er +‎ hele (“health”). The last element is often replaced with its synonym heil in Northern Middle English.
