Borrowed from French gouverneur, from Middle French gouverneur, from Old French gouvreneur, from Latin gubernātor, from Ancient Greek κυβερνήτης (kubernḗtēs), from κυβερνάω (kubernáō). Doublet of gubernator (governor).
