[edit]From Proto-Finnic *hilla (compare Karelian hillo, hilloi, Ludian hillo, Veps hil). Originally probably meaning "mash, jam, purée" (like in the derived term hillo), with the current meaning being a back-formation of hillamarja.

[edit]The term is most prevalent in Northern Finland. It is one of the three names considered standard by Kotus alongside lakka and suomuurain.
