From Vulgar Latin germānus (brother), from Latin germānus (of siblings), from germen (sprout, bud), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵénh₁mn̥ (offspring, seed), from *ǵenh₁- (to beget, to give birth). Cognate with Old Leonese and Old Spanish ermano.
