Pela[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Uncertain. Likely related with Proto-Tani *ju (“demon/evil spirit”), cf. Bokar u ju (“ghost”), also Old Chinese 鬼 (*kulʔ, “spirit, demon”), and Tangut 𗢛 (*ꞏju¹, “demon”), Horpa jə (“ghost, spirit”), and Nusu ʑui³³. Compare Lhao Vo yui, Lashi yu'.
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
jui⁵⁵
Usage notes[edit]
Since Pela people are mostly animists, they do not clearly distinguish good and evil spirits by using different terms. Cf. Jingpho nat.
Derived terms[edit]
- jui⁵⁵ ka̠u³¹ ("offer sacrifice to spirits")
- jui⁵⁵ taŋ⁵⁵ ("spirit seat")
- jui⁵⁵ tʰɔ⁵⁵ ("chant prayer")
