Hungarian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From *könyör (to ask someone; to feel pity for someone) + -ög (frequentative suffix).[1]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ˈkøɲørøɡ]
  • Hyphenation: kö‧nyö‧rög
  • Rhymes: -øɡ

Verb

[edit]

könyörög

  1. (intransitive) to beg, to implore, to supplicate (to a deity: -hoz/-hez/-höz, to a person: -nak/-nek)

Usage notes

[edit]

The verb form könyörgöm (I beg of you) also exists as a hypercorrection of könyörgök, and even though it is proscribed by most language authorities as grammatically incorrect, in actual usage it is heard more often than the correct form, to the point where some linguists now advocate in favor of it.[2]
