From Proto-Indo-European *keh₂- (> Proto-Indo-European *kéh₂-ro-s > Proto-Baltic *kāras).

Cognates include Old Norse hórr, Gothic 𐌷𐍉𐍂𐍃 (hōrs, adulterer) (from *hōra-), Sanskrit चारु (cā́ru, pleasant, lovely), Latin cārus (dear, beloved).[1]
