From Italian campagna (field; military operation) and French campagne, from Late Latin campānia (open country; battlefield), from Latin campus (field). Compare Spanish campaña, Portuguese campanha, Polish kampania, Russian кампания (kampanija). Doublet of kampo and ĉampano.
