Etymology

Borrowed from a South Slavic language, compare Old Church Slavonic казньць (kaznĭcĭ) ("chamberlain, person in charge of the treasury") a court title of state employees in medieval Bosnia and Serbia.[1][2] Ultimately derived from Proto-Slavic *kaznь, which was inherited into Serbo-Croatian kazna ("punishment, penalty, revelation").
