Etymology

Cognate with Latvian cìrvis, possibly dialectal Russian черв (červ, sickle), черва́к (červák, saw).[1][2] Derksen reconstructs Proto-Balto-Slavic *kirw(i)os, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)ker- (to cut), cf. skìrti, kir̃pti. Compare also Estonian kirves (axe).
