Inherited from Old Spanish almosna, from Vulgar Latin *alemosyna, from Late Latin eleēmosyna (alms) (compare French aumône, Italian elemosina, Portuguese esmola), from Ancient Greek ἐλεημοσύνη (eleēmosúnē, pity, mercy), from ἐλεήμων (eleḗmōn, pitiful, merciful). Cognate with English alms.
