From Javanese ꦭꦺꦴꦮꦺꦴꦁ (lowong, “vacant”), from Old Javanese luwaṅ (“pit, hole, cavity”), from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *luaŋ (“hole”), from Proto-Austronesian *luaŋ (“hole”). Doublet of luang and lubang. Compare to Malay lohong.
