Etymology

[edit]

From mīl(ēt) (to love) +‎ -īgs. Originally (in the 17th century) a synonym of mīļš (dear, beloved), including the romantic senses, these two words drifted apart semantically in the 18th century, at the end of which they were no longer fully synonymous.[1]
