From miell, because of its color; from Proto-Indo-European *h₂élbʰos (white). Structurally identical with Lithuanian melmuõ (kidney stone), Old Saxon melm (sand, dust) and Old High German melm (dust), both Proto-Germanic forms from *malmaz, *malmōn.
