From Proto-Norse *ᚱᚨᚢᛞᚨᛉ (*raudaʀ), from Proto-Germanic *raudaz, whence also Old English rēad, Old Frisian rād, Old Saxon rōd, Old High German rōt, Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌿𐌸𐍃 (rauþs). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rowdʰós < *h₁rewdʰ-.
