From Old French eschiu (shy, timid) (cf. eschiver), from Frankish *skeuh (shy, timid, fearful), from Proto-Germanic *skeuhaz (shy, frightened). Cognate with Old English sċēoh (shy), Dutch schuw (shy), Danish sky (shy), Sicilian schifìu (disgust, mess). More at shy, eschew.
