From French cigarette (cigarette), from cigare (cigar), from Spanish cigarro (cigar, cigarette), possibly from a Mayan language such as Yucatec Maya siyar (to smoke tobacco leaves) or Q'eqchi sik'ar (to smoke), possibly also from cigarro (male cicada), a form of cigarra (cicada), from a Vulgar Latin root *cicāla, from Latin cicāda (cicada), possibly from a substrate language, ultimately onomatopoeic.
