Etymology unclear, possibly from Proto-Germanic *fagraz (fair, beautiful; proper, suitable), thence Old Norse fagr, Old Swedish fagher and Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌲𐍂𐍃 (fagrs). Compare Finnish vauras and Karelian vauras.
