Inherited from Proto-Slavic *galъka, from *galъ (black, black-colored bird) + *-ъka (compare Russian -ка (-ka)). Cognate with Bulgarian гал (gal, jackdaw), dialectal Macedonian гал (gal, raven), archaic Serbo-Croatian га̏о (black, dirty) (fem. sg. га̏ла, neut. sg. га̏ло), га̑л (black color), Slovene gàl (bird with black feathers), dialectal Czech gáł (dirt; large black peas).
