Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic оубииство (ubiistvo), from Proto-Slavic *ubьjьstvo. In case of native origin *убе́йство (*ubéjstvo) would be expected, compare семе́йство (seméjstvo) and суде́йство (sudéjstvo). By surface analysis, уби́ть (ubítʹ) +‎ -ство (-stvo). Also compare Russian уби́вство (ubívstvo) (obsolete) and Ukrainian уби́вство (ubývstvo).
