Inherited from Old East Slavic угъль (ugŭlĭ) or угль (uglĭ), from Proto-Slavic *ǫglь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ánˀglis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁óngʷl̥ (charcoal). Cognate with Old Church Slavonic ѫгль (ǫglĭ).
