Etymology

From Middle Persian [script needed] (tn- /⁠tan-⁠/), present stem of [script needed] (ttn' /⁠tadan⁠/, to weave); the verb was regularized according to the present stem. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tanáwti, from Proto-Indo-European *tn̥néwti, from *ten- (to stretch, draw).
