Ottoman Turkish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *čakïr (light grey, greyish blue). Cognate with Karakhanid [script needed] (čaqïr, blue, grey (of eyes)), Kazakh шағыр (şağyr, blue/grey eyes), Bashkir шағыр (şağır, whitish), etc.

The senses ”wine, intoxicating drink” seems to have a different etymology. Cognate with Kipchak [script needed] (čager, wine) (attested in Codex Cumanicus), Turkmen çakyr (wine), Azerbaijani çaxır (wine), etc.
