Etymology 3

[edit]

First attested in the Seonjong yeonggajip eonhae (禪宗永嘉集諺解 / 선종영가집언해), 1456, as Middle Korean 비ᇫ움〮 (Yale: pìzwúm), from 비ᅀᅳ (pìzù, to adorn) +‎ (-wu-, modulator suffix) +‎ (-m, nominalizer).

The modern form can be understood as a shortening of earlier 비음 (bieum), which in turn reflects the complete elision of Middle Korean --. The Southern Chungcheong dialectal form 비슴 (biseum) reflects the pre-MK /s/.

Displaced completely by modern 꾸미다 (kkumida).
