Romanian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Perhaps from Old Church Slavonic калъ (kalŭ, dirt, filth), referring to the color of the river.

Alternately, due to the -ui ending, it may have been of Kipchak [Term?] origin.
