IP address (plural IP addresses)

  1. (Internet) A number assigned to each computer's or other device's network interface, which are active on a network. supporting the Internet Protocol, in order to distinguish each network interface, and hence each networked device) from every other network interface anywhere on the network.

When necessary, the specific version of the Internet Protocol being used is often stated:

  • IPv4 address (32 bits, normally written out in dotted decimal form, e.g. 198.51.100.56).
  • IPv6 address (128 bits, normally written out as eight groups of four hexadecimal digits, e.g. 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:7334).
