Possibly onomatopoeic — according to Duden, derived from a beckoning call for cats, “mi”, optionally reduplicated as “mi-mi(-mi)”. Compare against Albanian mace (cat), French matou (tomcat), and Proto-Slavic *maca (pussycat).
