Etymology

First attested as sixtisberen in the 13th century. Derived from a compound of the name of Saint Sixtus and the dative plural form of bêre (barn, house). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name. Compare Bierum and Burum.
