From Romanian Transnistria, from Latin trans + Romanian Nistru (Dniester) + Ancient Greek -ία (-ía): literally “beyond the river Dniester”. Analyzable as trans- +‎ Romanian Nistru +‎ -ia. This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
