  1. Of or pertaining to Vietnam.
    • 2019, Ocean Vuong, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, Jonathan Cape, page 228:

Translations

Noun

[edit]

Vietnamese (countable and uncountable, plural Vietnamese)

  1. (countable, chiefly in the plural) A person/people from Vietnam or of Vietnamese descent.
    • 2023, Cecile Pin, Wandering Souls, 4th Estate, page 36:
They were buried in a gravesite near Kai Tak, alongside other Vietnamese who hadn’t made it safely to shore.
  2. (uncountable) Vietnamese cuisine; traditional Vietnamese food.

Usage notes

[edit]

As with other terms for people formed with -ese, the countable singular noun in reference to a person (as in "I am a Vietnamese", "writing about Vietnamese cuisine as a Vietnamese") is uncommon and often taken as incorrect. In its place, the adjective is used, by itself (as in "I am Vietnamese") or with a word like person, man, or woman ("writing about Vietnamese cuisine as a Vietnamese person").

Translations
