From ari (bear) +‎ -xhi, since in circuses usually people of Roma background would be bear tamers. Compare Romanian ursar, Greek αρκουδιάρης (arkoudiáris), Bulgarian мечка́р (mečkár), also commonly used to refer to Gypsies.
