Lithuanian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Baltic *melˀ(n)- (black, blue), from Proto-Indo-European *melh₂-(n-) (dark, red, dirty).[1] Cognates include Latvian melns (black), Old Prussian melne (bruise), Ancient Greek μέλας (mélas, dark, black) (whence English melanin). Probably akin to Proto-Slavic *malina (raspberry).
