From Proto-Algonquian *meçkwesiwa (he/she (animate) is red). Cognate with Mohegan-Pequot musqisuw (he/she is red), Munsee máxksuw (he/she is red), Malecite-Passamaquoddy mqeyu (he/she is red), Ojibwe miskozi (he/she is red), Cree ᒥᐦᑯᓯᐤ (mihkosiw, he/she is red).
