From Old French morsel, from Medieval Latin morsellum (a bit, a little piece), diminutive of Latin morsum (a bit), neuter past participle of mordeō, mordēre (bite, nibble, gnaw), from Proto-Indo-European *merə- (to rub, wipe; to pack, rob).
