Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Slavic *vitędzь, from Proto-Germanic *wīkingaz (whence Old Norse víkingr (bay's dweller)). Doublet of wiking (Viking) and witeź (hero, valiant knight), the former being a more recent borrowing from Germanic and the latter a borrowing from East Slavic.
