Etymology

Sino-Vietnamese word from , contracted from 澳大利 (Úc Đại Lợi), from Mandarin 澳大利亞澳大利亚 (Àodàlìyà, phonetically properly in Sino-Vietnamese Áo Đại Lợi Á). The reading úc (inlet) is used perhaps to avoid confusion with Áo (Austria).
