à travers

  1. through

Construire un pont à travers un ruisseau.Build a bridge across a stream.

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Not to be confused with de travers, en travers or au travers de.
  • Like most French terms ending in -rs, à travers does not form phonological liaison with subsequent vowel-initial words; instead, enchaînement occurs with the /ʁ/:
    à travers /a tʁa.vɛʁ/
    à travers un champ /a.tʁa.vɛ.ʁ‿œ̃ ʃɑ̃/ (across a field)
