From Proto-Baltic *āž-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂e(y)ǵ- (goat). Cognates include Lithuanian ožỹs, Old Prussian wosux (/⁠vōzuks⁠/), Proto-Slavic *azь (Russian язь (jazʹ) “ide (fish)” < “goat”), Sanskrit अज (ajá), Albanian dhi (< *a-dhi), Old Armenian այծ (ayc).[1]
