Etymology

šáltas (cold) +‎ -ìnis (adjectival suffix), reanalyzed as a noun. The term originally referred to cold water springs, before being extended to springs and sources in general. For a semantic parallel, compare Russian студене́ц (studenéc, spring, well), from Proto-Slavic *studènъ (cold).[1]
