From Proto-Hellenic *néhomai, from Proto-Indo-European *nes- (to join with, to conceal oneself). Cognate with Νέστωρ (Néstōr), νόστος (nóstos), νίσομαι (nísomai), ναίω (naíō), ναιετάω (naietáō), νᾱός (nāós).
