From *arslan "lion" (compare Old Turkic [script needed] (arslan, lion)), from Proto-Turkic *arsïlan.

Cognate with Kazakh арыстан (arystan) Kyrgyz арстан (arstan), Southern Altai арслан (arslan), Uzbek arslon, Uyghur ئارسلان (arslan), Azerbaijani aslan, Turkish aslan/arslan, Turkmen, Crimean Tatar arslan, etc.
