Etymology

Derived via Western European languages from Latin atrophia, from Ancient Greek ἀτροφία (atrophía, a wasting away), from ἄτροφος (átrophos, ill-fed, un-nourished). Compare Russian атрофи́я (atrofíja), Belarusian атрафі́я (atrafíja), Polish atrofia.
