Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old East Slavic березозолъ (berezozolŭ, April). The first part is from берёза (berjóza), the second is likely related to зелёный (zeljónyj), compare зо́лото (zóloto), злак (zlak). The meaning is therefore: "the month when birches leaf out".
