  • (file)

Noun[edit]

братовче́дка (bratovčédkaf (masculine братовче́д)

  1. female cousin
Братовчедката ми ходи да учи в Холандия.
Bratovčedkata mi hodi da uči v Holandija.
My cousin's going to study in Holland.

Usage notes[edit]

Cousins of differing levels of shared ancestry are expressed using the same numeric idiom as in English, e.g. one's first cousin is translated into Bulgarian using пъ́рва братовче́дка (pǎ́rva bratovčédka). Meanwhile, cousins "removed" are expressed using the word отстране́н (otstranén), alongside a word or phrase for how many times removed, e.g. братовче́дка веднъ́ш отстране́на (bratovčédka vednǎ́š otstranéna, cousin once removed), братовче́дка два пъ́ти отстране́на (bratovčédka dva pǎ́ti otstranéna, cousin twice removed), etc.
