Bulgarian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Formally reflecting an earlier *bergališče, from the same origin as Брега́лница (Bregálnica, “Bregalnica”) (hydronym). Either derived from Proto-Slavic *bergъ (“coast, bank”) or possibly of Paleo-Balkan origin akin to Thracian Βέργα (Vérga), Dacian Bregedáva. Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰergʰ- (“to protect, to fortify, to tower”).
