Inherited from Old East Slavic жестъкъ (žestŭkŭ), from Proto-Slavic *žestъkъ. Cognate to Old Church Slavonic жестъ (žestŭ, hard), жестѣти (žestěti, to harden). Also related to жесто́кий (žestókij, cruel).
